NEGOTIATIONS WERE HELD BETWEEN PRESIDENTS GURBANGULY BERDIMUHAMEDOV AND MOHAMMED ASHRAF GHANI

On February 21, 2019, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov had a meeting with President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Mohammad Ashraf Ghani.

The heads of the two countries discussed important international and regional issues, the role and the future of international initiatives of Turkmenistan in achieving peace in Afghanistan, as well as issues of bilateral development in the political-diplomatic, trade and economic sphere, in transport and communications, energy and other areas paying particular attention to the cultural and humanitarian sphere.

During the meeting, the parties noted the positive opportunities for joint efforts of the two countries to implement such projects as the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline (TAPI), the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan electric and fiber-optic communication lines, the Kerky-Hamyap-Garkyn power line, as well as the importance of the built Kerky-Imamnazar-Akina, Serhetabat-Turgundi railways and the implementation of the future Akina-Andkhoy, Turgundi-Herat railways.

At the end of the meeting in an enlarged composition, the ceremony of signing bilateral documents was held. Between the relevant ministries and heads of sectoral institutions of two countries, more than ten documents were signed on cooperation in the areas of trade, economy, industry, transport, customs, and in the cultural and humanitarian sphere.

Among them, the Joint Communiqué of the Presidents of Turkmenistan and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan signed by Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, as well as the Agreement on Strategic Cooperation between Turkmenistan and Afghanistan can be particularly noted.

After the end of the signing ceremony, the heads of the two states made an address to the press.
