CLIMATE CHANGE ISSUES WERE DISCUSSED AT THE C5+1 MINISTERIAL MEETING

Climate policy leaders of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, the Republic of Uzbekistan and the United States of America convened virtually for a C5+1 Ministerial on September 16, 2021.

Delegation of Turkmenistan was led by the Minister of Agriculture and Environment Protection of the country A.Altyyev

The parties discussed the issues of the climate change, the critical nature of the climate crisis, in particular its negative impact the availability of water for food security and energy generation, as well as the biodiversity.

Such targets as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improvement the ecological, social, economic, and demographic situation in the Aral Sea region had been defined. Also such issues as cooperation in the field of disaster risk reduction and sustainability to climate change were considered.

The participants underlined the critical need to work together for the development of the use of renewable energy, as well as through support of the social transition for segments of the population vulnerable to climate change. In this context, the parties noted significant potential of regional cooperation and partnership between the governments of the USA and Central Asian countries to achieve these goals.

At the end of the meeting the parties on behalf of their countries reaffirmed their commitment to action at the national level to increase environmental cooperation within the framework of the C5+1 regional diplomatic platform.
